Short answer
A 5 x 7 ft backdrop or a 53 in paper roll covers headshots for one person. Gray is the safest color for corporate and actor headshots; white for clean, bright looks; a soft mottled muslin or canvas for a classic portrait feel. Keep the person 3 ft or more in front of it.
Size
A headshot frame at the subject is under 2 ft tall. Even with a few feet of gap behind them, the camera sees only a small area of backdrop. Westcott sizes 5 x 7 ft for headshots and three quarter portraits; Savage sizes the 53 in roll for head shots and three quarter (Westcott, Savage). Distance, light, aperture
- Distance first. At least 3 ft, and more if you can. Shadows fall on the floor instead of the backdrop.
- A background light behind the subject, aimed at the backdrop, lifts a gray into light gray and adds separation.
- Wider aperture blurs texture and creases (Improve Photography).
- Longer lens. 85 to 135 mm on full frame sees less backdrop and flatters faces.
Questions people ask
What color backdrop is best for professional headshots?
Gray is the most common: it is neutral, flatters most skin tones, and can be lit lighter or darker. White suits bright corporate and e-commerce styles; dark gray or black suits dramatic actor headshots. Ask what the client will use the photo for.
Can I use a collapsible backdrop for headshots?
Yes. A 5 x 6 ft reversible collapsible is a common on-location headshot backdrop. It sets up in seconds and covers head and shoulders with room to spare.
How far behind the person should the backdrop be?
At least 3 ft. Westcott suggests about 3 ft to keep shadows off the backdrop. More distance blurs texture and wrinkles and lets you light the backdrop on its own.
Do I need a stand for a headshot backdrop?
A T stand or a collapsible holder on a light stand is enough. A 5 x 7 ft fabric can also hang from wall hooks or a tension rod.
