How to set up a backdrop stand

A two stand support system goes up in about ten minutes once you have done it twice. The order matters: stands and crossbar first, backdrop second, height last.

Short answer

Spread both stands a little wider than the backdrop, join the crossbar sections to the width you need, seat the bar on both stands at a low height, load the backdrop, raise both stands evenly, clamp the backdrop, then sandbag each stand before anyone walks near it.

What you need

  • Two stands and crossbar sectionsFind it
  • Spring clamps two for paper, six or more for fabricFind it
  • Sandbags one per standFind it
  • Gaffer tape for the front edge of a sweepFind it

Step by step

  1. Pick the spot

Choose a flat, hard floor with room for the gap in front of the backdrop. Leave about 1 ft behind it for the stand legs.

  2. Spread both stands

Open the legs fully to their stops so the stands are stable. Set them a little wider apart than the backdrop or roll core.

  3. Build the crossbar

Join the sections to the width you need. Westcott notes two crossbars mount backdrops up to 7 ft and three up to 10.5 ft on its system; check yours.

  4. Load the backdrop low

With the stands at their lowest, slide a paper core or a pole pocket onto the bar, or clamp fabric along it. Then seat the bar in both stand cradles.

  5. Raise evenly

Raise one stand a section, then the other, so the bar stays level. Lock each section.

  6. Clamp

Clamp both ends of a paper roll to the bar. For fabric, clamp the top corners, then pull the sides taut to the stands.

  7. Add the sweep and weight

Pull paper or fabric down onto the floor, tape the front edge, and put a sandbag on one leg of each stand.

Questions people ask

How do I put a paper roll on a backdrop stand?

Slide the crossbar through the cardboard core with the stands low, lift the bar into the stand cradles, then raise each stand a little at a time. Clamp both ends of the roll so it cannot unspool.

Why does my backdrop stand keep falling over?

Usually the legs are not fully spread, the crossbar is off center, or there is no weight on the base. Spread the legs to their stops, center the load and put a sandbag on a leg of each stand.

How high should a backdrop stand be?

High enough that the top of the backdrop clears the top of the frame at the backdrop. For headshots that can be 6 to 7 ft; for full length with a sweep, often 8 ft or more. The size calculator gives a figure for your shot.

Can one person set up a backdrop stand?

For fabric and 53 inch paper, yes. For 107 inch paper, a helper makes it much easier and safer, as Savage notes.
