Choose paper if
- You want a solid, clean color with no texture.
- You shoot full length or products on a sweep.
- You have a fixed studio with dry storage.
Choose muslin if
- You want a painted, classic portrait look.
- You shoot on location or have little storage.
- You are fine steaming before a shoot, or you shoot with distance and shallow depth of field.

Which lasts longer, muslin or paper?
Muslin. Cloth survives years of folding and washing. Paper is consumed: you cut off the dirty or torn floor section and pull down fresh paper until the roll runs out.
Which is cheaper?
Paper rolls cost less up front, but you use them up. Muslin costs more once and then lasts. If you shoot full length often, paper gets used faster.
Which is better for full length photos?
Paper, for a clean floor. Muslin sweeps can ruck up and show wrinkles where people step, unless you weigh and stretch it.
Which is better for travel?
Muslin or polyester, by far. Paper rolls are long, heavy and dent easily. Muslin folds into a bag.
