Short answer
For fabric up to about 5 x 7 ft: removable adhesive hooks through grommets, or clamps on a tension rod across an alcove or doorway. For larger cloth: a curtain rod screwed into the wall. For paper rolls: wall or ceiling roller brackets screwed into studs or joists.
Five ways
Adhesive hooks
For a light fabric backdrop with grommets. Put one hook per grommet along the top, level, on clean paint. Westcott suggests this for small backdrops like a 5 x 7 ft.
Tension rod
Wedge a heavy duty tension rod across an alcove, a doorway or between two shelves, then clamp the backdrop to it or slide a pole pocket on.
Curtain rod
A wall mounted curtain rod with brackets in studs holds larger cloth, and the backdrop slides back like a curtain.
Clamps on furniture
For headshots and products, clamp a small backdrop to a bookcase, a door top or the back of a chair. Quick, but check it does not sag into the frame.
Wall or ceiling rollers
For paper: brackets or a chain drive system screwed into studs or ceiling joists hold one or more rolls and raise them out of the way.
What you need
Get the height right
Hang the top above the highest point the camera sees at the backdrop, not just above the subject’s head. Check with the calculator, then take a test frame before the session.

Questions people ask
Can I hang a backdrop with command hooks?
For light fabric, yes. Westcott suggests removable wall hooks for smaller, lighter backdrops such as its 5 x 7 ft X-Drop. Check the hook weight rating and press them on clean, dry paint.
How do I hang a backdrop on a wall without damaging it?
Removable adhesive hooks or a tension rod leave no holes. Painter’s tape alone is not strong enough for most backdrops and can pull paint.
How do I hang a seamless paper roll without a stand?
Use wall or ceiling mounted brackets or a roller system, screwed into studs or joists, with a crossbar through the core. Paper rolls are too heavy for adhesive hooks.
