Short answer

Collapsible backdrops are for one person from the waist or knees up: headshots, school and event photos, video calls and streaming. Common sizes are about 5 x 6 ft and 6 x 7 ft. They are too small for full length or groups, and need a stand clip, a holder or a wall to lean on.

Setting one up

  1. Open it away from faces

Hold it at arm’s length, release the strap and let it spring open. The rim snaps out with force.

  2. Mount it

Clip the top of the rim to a light stand with a backdrop holder, or set the bottom on the floor and lean it on a wall.

  3. Pull the subject forward

Leave 3 ft or more between subject and backdrop so shadows fall off it.

  4. Fold it back

Twist the rim into loops, stack them, strap it, and put it in its bag.

Questions people ask

How do you fold a collapsible backdrop?

Hold the rim at the top with both hands, twist your hands in opposite directions so the rim forms loops, then bring the loops together into a stack and slip it in the bag. It takes a few tries; watch the maker video for your model.

What size collapsible backdrop do I need?

About 5 x 6 ft covers headshots and half length of one person. About 6 x 7 ft gives room for three quarter shots or a second person close in. For full length, use paper or a long fabric sweep.

How do you hold up a collapsible backdrop?

With a collapsible backdrop holder or clip on a light stand, leaning it against a wall, or with a helper. Some makers sell a dedicated stand that grips the rim at the top and bottom.

Are collapsible backdrops wrinkle free?

They hang smoothly because the rim keeps the fabric taut, but the fabric can still hold creases from being twisted. A quick steam fixes deep ones.
