Short answer
Buy the width for your widest shot: 53 in for headshots, three quarter shots or two people close; 86 in (about 7 ft) for kids, pets and smaller rooms; 107 in (about 9 ft) for full length, couples and small groups; 140 in for large groups, sold in only a few colors (Savage lists black, super white, tech green and storm gray). Store rolls upright in a dry room.

How to hang a roll
Set the stands wider than the roll
Assemble a two stand support system with the crossbar a few inches wider than the paper core. Sandbag both stands.
Slide the crossbar through the core
With a helper on wide rolls, slide the crossbar through the cardboard core and lift it onto the stand cradles.
Clamp both ends
Put a spring clamp at each end of the roll so it cannot spin and unspool on its own.
Pull down and sweep
Unroll enough paper to curve gently onto the floor and run past where the subject will stand. Sweep only onto a flat, hard floor: carpet makes it crinkle and tear when someone steps on it.
Tape the front edge
Tape the end to the floor so it cannot curl into a trip hazard. Savage recommends gaffer tape over duct tape because it peels off clean.
Keep it clean and flat
- Shoes off, or covers on. Footprints show on light paper.
- Roll it up after every session. Do not use the stand for storage (Savage).
- Cut, do not tear. A utility knife gives a cleaner line than scissors.
- Store upright in a dry room. Lying flat or hanging, heavy rolls sag and the core warps (Backdrop Express). More in how to store backdrops.
Which colors first
A mid gray first, then white, then black. Gray swings light or dark with lighting; white needs its own lights to stay white; black needs light kept off it. Then add a color you will use for a client or brand. See backdrop colors.
Questions people ask
How long is a roll of seamless paper?
The common length is 12 yards (36 ft) for 53, 86 and 107 inch rolls. Wider and longer rolls exist, such as 140 inch rolls in 50 and 105 ft lengths.
Can you reuse seamless paper?
Yes. Roll it back up after each shoot. When the floor section gets dirty or torn, cut it off with a utility knife and pull down fresh paper. Savage suggests recycling the cut ends.
How do I stop seamless paper from wrinkling?
Keep it dry. Paper absorbs moisture from humid air and ripples, Savage explains. Store rolls standing up, not lying across a stand, and do not leave a roll hanging between shoots.
Can I cut a 107 inch roll down to a narrower width?
Yes. Savage describes cutting a long roll with a fine-toothed saw in a mitre box. It is a way to get a short, narrow roll in a color that only comes wide.
Do I need clamps?
Yes. Clamp both ends of the roll to the crossbar so it cannot unspool. A heavy roll pulled quickly can keep unrolling several extra feet.
